Banff Invisibility Index

Artist Residency 2015

The Banff Invisibility Index is an artist book made at The Banff Centre in January - February 2015. 

I was taking part in the Food Water Life thematic residency, led by Lucy and Jorge Orta. The index was an attempt to document the relationships, connections and ideas that developed between the seventeen participating artists over the six week residency period. The project evolved over time, both conceptually and physically, as the process began to affect the relationships it was seeking to visualise. 

I spoke to each artist individually, then drew a portrait of that conversation, setting myself rules to create points and lines, and using my intuition to inform the intangible elements of each piece. The drawings became part diagram, part psychic reading. 

As with my previous attempts to draw flows of water, The Banff Invisibility Index is an exploration of infinitely dynamic and intangible flows, but this time, between people, places, and ideas. 

Each original pen and and ink drawing was given back to its subject, who also got a copy of the limited edition book comprising reproductions of all the drawings and legends.  

An edition of the book has been acquired by The Paul D Fleck Library’s Artist Book Collection, The Banff Centre.
